Peter Ganz, MD

Professor in Residence
M_MED-ZSFG-CARD

Dr. Ganz is Director of the Center of Excellence in Vascular Research at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. He is also a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Ganz has been a pioneer and a leader in translational and clinical cardiovascular research. His laboratory was the first to describe vascular endothelial function in the state of health and endothelial dysfunction in atherosclerosis in humans (N Engl J Med 1986; 315:1046-1051). He identified risk factors associated with endothelial dysfunction (Circulation 1990; 81:491-497) and showed that endothelial dysfunction can be corrected with statin therapy (N Engl J Med 1995; 332:488-493). Currently, Dr. Ganz is making important discoveries in another field - precision medicine enabled by proteomics and machine learning. He is using modified aptamers as binding reagents to quantify the levels of thousands of proteins simultaneously in blood in order to elucidate the risk and biological basis of diseases (JAMA 2016;315:2532-2541; Circulation 2018;137:999-1010; Nature Medicine 2019;25:1851-1857). Dr. Ganz has authored over 250 peer-reviewed articles, many widely cited and published in the top tier medical journals. Numerous trainees who worked in Dr. Ganz’s laboratory have gone onto key leadership positions in academic medicine nationally and internationally. Dr. Ganz served as the Chief of the Cardiovascular Division at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Maurice Eliaser Distinguished Professor of Medicine at University of California, San Francisco from 2008 to 2019. Dr. Ganz received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School, completed his residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital and cardiovascular fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He spent 25 years directing cardiovascular research in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, prior to arriving to the University of California, San Francisco in 2008.
