Becoming a CHIC Scholar

CHIC Scholars receive (per year, for one year, up to a maximum of three years*):

  • $100,000 salary plus accompanying fringe benefits
  • Up to $30,000 for research and career development support that can be used for research personnel, equipment, supplies, tuition and fees for career development courses and activities, and/or travel related to research or career development
  • Up to $2,000 for travel to mandatory NHLBI K12 meeting (per meeting)

* Funding after the first year is contingent upon the successful completion of milestones agreed-upon by the K12 Scholar, his/her Mentor/Mentors, and the K12 Program Directors

In addition to Mentor Table in the application linked below, every candidate must include the following:

1. Candidate’s Statement of Career Goals (1 page)

2. Candidate’s Career Development Plan (2 pages)

3. Candidate’s Research Project Specific Aims (1 page)

4. Candidate’s Research Plan (3 pages) plus Bibliography

5. Candidate’s NIH Biosketch (5 pages)

6. Mentor/Mentors Letter of Support (2 pages)

a. If more than one Mentor is proposed, one individual must be listed as the Primary Mentor.

7. Mentor’s Biosketch (5 pages per Mentor, maximum of 3 for application)

8. Table of Mentor’s Prior Mentees (where Mentor served as Primary or Co-Primary Research Mentor) using Template

9. Division Chief/Department Chair – Letter of Institutional Commitment (1 page)

After that, simply:

2. Keep the following deadlines in mind:  the submission deadline is Monday, July 1, 2019 (11:59 PM, Pacific), and the target start date is January 1, 2020.
